Unearthed Book Review

Unearthed is the first book in the duology by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner.

BLURB

Jules Addison and Amelia Radcliffe join forces in a tomb-raiding race on a newly-discovered planet to unravel the secrets of an ancient, long-extinct civilisation–only to uncover a revelation that could spell the end of the human race…

When Earth intercepts a message from a long-extinct alien race, it seems like the solution the planet has been waiting for. The Undying’s advanced technology has the potential to undo environmental damage and turn lives around, and Gaia, their former home planet, is a treasure trove waiting to be uncovered. For Jules Addison and his fellow scholars, the discovery of an alien culture offers unprecedented opportunity for study…as long as scavengers like Amelia Radcliffe don’t loot everything first. Despite their opposing reasons for smuggling themselves onto the alien planet’s surface, they’re both desperate to uncover the riches hidden in the Undying temples. Beset by rival scavenger gangs, Jules and Amelia form a fragile alliance…but both are keeping secrets that make trust nearly impossible. As they race to decode the ancient messages, Jules and Amelia must navigate the traps and trials within the Undying temples and stay one step ahead of the scavvers on their heels. They came to Gaia certain that they had far more to fear from their fellow humans than the ancient beings whose mysteries they’re trying to unravel.

But the more they learn about the Undying, the more Jules and Amelia start to feel like their presence in the temple is part of a grand design – one that could spell the end of the human race…

REVIEW

This book definitely gave me Lara Croft vibes as they travel on a different planet trying to find new technology and secrets that the Undying left behind. It was great to see Amelia and Jules work together as they reveal secrets when they’re trying to investigate a temple and get off the planet.

It was fantastic exploring a planet that had two suns with two teenagers that came from two different backgrounds but worked together to get to a temple which hopefully achieved their goals even though they were very different.

We meet Amelia as she is on Gaia trying to reach a temple to scavenge for technology that was left by an ancient race called the Undying. Along her journey she runs into Jules and saves him from other scavengers that would likely kill him. Jules is an academic, while Amelia had to grow up and earn money trying to get her sister out of a bad situation.

They work together and we see their feelings for each other change throughout the story. Both of them come to realise the main goal of the Undying but it comes too late and the book ends with a huge cliffhanger.

This book is extremely well written and you can imagine being with Amelia and Jules as the overcome their challenges. I definitely recommend this story and give it 5 stars.
